The garage painting
project was started in April 2004 as a result of looking at methods of ridding
the estate of graffiti. South Beds District Council had already started
there own programme of cleaning graffiti from other areas. We started on
the garages. By September when the weather worsened we had completed 130 garages with a further 20 in various stages of completion. The wet icy weather forced us to close the project for the winter but we will be restarting it again in March provided that the weather is suitable for painting. Would you like your garage door painted? All we ask is a little help from you if it is only making tea. All labour and materials are totally free. Please send
you're Name and garage address, stating weather you are a SBDC tenant
/ Private owner or other. (This is for dater collection purposes only).

| In October 2004 Parkside Voice was approached by Anna Scattergood Regional Manager for the Midlands, TPAS (Tenant Participation Advisory Service) on behalf of the Home Office to run a pilot trial of a new resource pack for car crime reduction which you can see on the Home Office website @ www.crimereduction.co.uk/helpingU2communicate/vehicle_resource.htm The idea was to run a campaign to make the residents in the local area aware of car crime and how to help themselves in reducing it. There is a national target set by central government to reduce vehicle crime by 30%. The group used information and clipart from the site to produce flyers and posters, we also formed links with the local police and the local beat manager who provided us with crime statistics and other useful media. As the campaign would be in the run-up to Christmas we made this our focus, i.e. not leaving your shopping / presents in the car on show. Funding was applied for through the local council and other organisations to cover our costs. A short film was made showing the group at work and highlighting some of the problems we had to tackle and how we overcame them. The film was to form part of an information pack for national distribution. Over the four-week period the campaign was run there was a 50% reduction in car crime compared to the same period the previous year. The group was invited to the Neighbourhood Watch National Conference, hosted by former Crimewatch presenter Sue Cook, to see their video launched in front of 900 delegates.
