Community Mural Project
The aim of this project is to produce a community mural on the wall of the ‘The Dog and Duck’ pub, Parkside Drive.  The project is aimed at working with the teenagers on the estate, who, in conjunction with a paid artist, will design and produce a piece of artwork that will be mounted on boards on the wall for a period of a minimum of twelve months.   The finished piece will be unveiled at a public ceremony on Saturday 3rd June 2006.   This project is mainly funded by a grant from the Local Network Fund.
The mural project was developed as in idea of reintegrating teenagers back into the community, and positively engaging with the young people.  Like all estates, Parkside suffers from anti social behaviour issues, and has high levels of petty crime, such as graffiti and vandalism.  Bored teenagers who feel disassociated from the community that they live in perpetrate a large proportion of this.  The mural is aimed at giving the young people an opportunity to positively contribute to their physical environment and develop a sense of ownership of their estate. The project also aims to provide access to art for a variety of young people, especially those who may not have had opportunities to express themselves in this way before.
The concept for all the art produced will be ‘Teenage voices on Parkside Estate’, and will encompass how the young people see the area around them. The artist will be running three workshops, one with Northfields School, one with Kings Houghton middle school and one with the Parkside Youthie, youth group, dates to be confirmed.

A focus group will be created out of these workshops, based on those most interested and committed to this project.  In the week of half term (starting 29th May), the group will work with the artist to design and execute a mural on the outside wall of ‘The Dog and Duck’ pub.  The area to be used incorporates three walls, running along continuous from each other, each about 6ft high.  The painting will be done on boards, which will then be securely fixed to the wall.  The mural will be unveiled on 3rd June 2006 at a public ceremony.  There will be a street party, with stalls and refreshments, and an exhibition of the progress of the mural and the work of the young people who attended the workshops.

Watch this space for details of the chosen artist and dates for the workshops.

Parkside Voice is a voluntary community group within the Parkside Estate, Houghton Regis. We are working with an artist to produce a mural with the teenagers from the area to help them to promote themselves as a benefit to the community, not a nuisance.
We are holding two workshops between 6pm – 9pm (refreshments will be provided), one tomorrow 16th May and one on Thursday 18th May at the Kingsland Community Centre, Parkside Drive, Houghton Regis. Each attendee will produce an individual work of art that will be displayed at the unveiling of the Mural on 3rd June in front of the Mayor and the local press. Parkside Residents Get Stake in Policing Plans

AN INNOVATIVE agreement that gives residents in the Parkside area of Houghton Regis a greater say in the way their community is policed will be officially signed this month.

Police and community leaders will gather at Kingsland Community College on Saturday, April 29, to officially launch a new Neighbourhood Policing Agreement that sets out what the priorities are and how police resources should be allocated.

The event follows months of discussions between groups including Bedfordshire Police, Parkside Stakeholder Focus Group, Parkside Voice Tenants and Residents Group, Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity and South Beds Community Safety Partnership.

Supt Andy Street, who will sign on behalf of Bedfordshire Police, said: “Dunstable’s Downside estate was the first in the country to become a Stakeholder Policing area and is already proving to be a remarkable success.

“We are delighted to get another project off the ground in Parkside and I would like to publicly thank all those involved for their hard work. Stakeholder policing is all about listening to what communities want from us and ensuring priorities are identified and addressed with public co-operation.”

Jessica Murray, who will sign on behalf of the focus group added: “The significant negotiations have aimed to produce an agreement that satisfies the needs of the community and is deliverable within the limits of police resources.

“Hopefully this, and other pilot schemes, will prove in their success that this form of policing is the best model for the future.”

The signing will take place at 3pm during a Community Safety Day at Kingsland Community College that runs from noon to 6pm and will feature a wide range of family orientated attractions.

The day is the brainchild of Parkside Voice web designer Nick Grundy and will include bouncy castles, face painting, refreshments, competitions, prizes, crime prevention advice and representatives from police, fire service and local authorities.

BRCC field officer (stakeholder policing) Bob Bridle added: “We hope to build on the success of Parkside Voice’s Christmas party, which saw 300 people attending.”

Christmas Community Party
Another success for Parkside Voice Tenants and Residents association, who hosted their first Christmas Community party on Saturday the 10th December 2005 at Kingsland Community Centre. The weather was good, if a bit chilly and the turn out was better than we could have expected. There were indoor and outdoor activities for everyone who attended.
Outside we had one of the watches from Dunstable fire station, who brought down one of their fire engines, which was a big hit with the children. Everyone was allowed to have a look on board the engine and lots of people enjoyed sounding the siren! The Fire Service was also busy taking details from people who wanted to have a FREE Fire Safety check in their homes in time for Christmas. Thanks to Jane Clark and the crew for all their hard work.
There were also fairground rides and a fireworks display put on by Dragon Pyrotechnics, which was brilliant and lit up the night sky at 8 o'clock.

Inside the hall we had Disco and karaoke kindly provided by Luke Taylor and Dean Douglas from Parkside Youth group.Learn Direct allowed us use of their IT suite so people could try out the Internet and see the new Parkside Voice web site.

Children between 5 and 9 years old were offered the chance to design their own Christmas stocking, which was a very popular activity. Santa will be busy filling them all on Christmas Eve. Thanks to Bob Bridle from the BRCC for all his help.
The children of St Vincent's lower school brought along the Christmas lanterns they had made and decorated and sung some carols.
Santa and Mrs Claus took time out from their hectic schedule to drop in for a guest appearance and give presents to all. With over one hundred children queuing up to visit Santa's grotto, it was lucky that Santa remembered to bring two sacks of presents!
We would also like to thank Annette Wilson from South Beds District Council for part funding and helping to organise the event, and the committee members who were there, for all their help before, during and after the event.

Of course none of this would have been possible without the kind donations made by: -
Roger Marsh Estate agents Houghton Regis
The CO-OP supermarket Houghton Reis
South Beds District Council

Last, but by no means least, a big thank you to all the tenants, residents and friends of Parkside who came along and made the evening the huge success it was.

Haloween Disco
Unfortunately attendances for the Halloween disco held at Kingsland Community College were lower than we had expected, however those who did attend thoroughly enjoyed the evening and have asked that we hold another similar event in the not to distant future.
Plans are already under discussion for something later in the year.
Watch this space.
