Local Lad Represents England in Commonwealth Games

Basketball player Robert Reed 26 originally from Dolphin Drive has been selected to play for England in the commonwealth games in Melbourne Australia.

It's the first time that basketball has been included in the Games.

Robert attended Hawthorn Park Lower School, King's Houghton Middle School, Northfields Upper School and Houghton Regis Upper School.

Robert, who is now a mere 6ft 11ins, was a promising player as a teenager. As a youngster and represented England at youth level. He also played for the Leopards, a London club, where he played at junior and senior level.

He won a scholarship to attend high school and university in America. Where he played for Rider University NCAA, He has also played for; Lappeenranta, Finland; Falco, Hungary; and DMU Leicester Riders.

Robert began playing with the England squad last year and already has 15 caps.

Robert is staying with his mum and stepfather, Pam and Jim Gill, who still live on Parkside, and were key figures in organising the town carnival for a number of years in times gone by before he jets of to the warmer climate.

England’s first match is against Barbados on the 16th of March, I am sure we will all be supporting them.

You can see the full games schedule @ http://www.m2006.com.au/Channels/ the official site for the games.

The Old Bus Lane.
Since Arriva stopped using the link road from the end of Parkside Drive to Pastures way. It has been plagued by fly tippers, which has been costing the Town Council a lot of money to deal with.
The result of consultation with the bus company and the emergency services is that the bus company will no longer require the link, and the emergency services do not wish to use it as they cannot get a guarantee it will be keep clear and a delay could cost lives. So it has been decided to close it at both ends with locked gates.
There will still be foot and bike access. It is hoped to have the gates in place by the end of February 2004. It is now 2006 and we have gates, well a gate lets hope it's up to the job.
